Dental Braces (Orthodontics)
Orthodontics is ideal for the perfect smile. By orthodontics, crowding of the teeth, spacing, asymmetries are corrected, or other stages of a complex treatment are ensured. Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry that deals with relieving, correcting some positions of the teeth on the arch. These changes are made by means of orthodontic appliances. They can be fixed or mobile. Treatment is necessary both for aesthetic reasons, but also for dento-maxillary health. We are talking, for example, about dental crowds that make it difficult or sometimes even impossible to properly sanitize, and as a result gingival inflammation occurs. This is manifested by bleeding when brushing, painful embarrassment, redness of the gums, their increase in volume.

Instructions for use of fixed braces
– Do not consume hard, sticky foods
– After applying the device or after monthly checks you may feel tension. This is normal because the teeth begin to change their position. An analgesic (Nurofen, Ibuprofen) is recommended if necessary
– In case of painful lesions (generally inside the cheek) orthodontic wax is applied (recommended by the specialist doctor) over the causative wire / bracket and a visit to the dentist is scheduled.
– Rigorous hygiene is required. Interdental brushes are used, special for patients with braces.

What do you need to know about braces?

When do I know I need orthodontic treatment?

Most patients want orthodontic treatment for aesthetic reasons. In case of presentation to the general dentist, he may recommend a specialist consultation. Also, parents may notice in children / adolescents an improper alignment of the teeth, the persistence of some spaces after the loss of the milk teeth, with delays in the eruption of the permanent teeth, etc. Also in the category of signs of orthodontic problems are: finger sucking (pest aged 3 years), breathing with the mouth open, swallowing with the tongue between the arches (infantile swallowing).

Up to what age can an orthodontic treatment be followed?

There is no age limit, but it is recommended to start treatment as early as possible – childhood – adolescence, when the body is still growing and thus more malleable to the forces transmitted through the orthodontic apparatus. It is never too late for an orthodontic treatment. It's never too late for the perfect smile. Orthodontic treatment has very good benefits and results for both children and adults. It is a long-term investment. The fact is, however, that the alignment of the teeth is carried out faster at an earlier age. Thus, the difference lies in the fact that adults will have to wear the device for a longer time. Braces can also be applied to people of the third age, for preprotetic purposes.

When is the fixed or mobile appliance indicated?

Mobile devices are used in children from 6 to 11 years, since they also have the role of stimulating the development of the maxillary bones. It is important to wear it as long as it is recommended by the orthodontist. Fixed appliances are applied after the age of 12 years. They have the advantage that the treatment no longer depends on the collaboration with the child because they are glued to the teeth with a special material by means of brackets and thus will be worn permanently.Basically, they are devices that are subsequently anchored with a wire spring that will allow over time to direct the teeth in the correct position.

How long should I wear braces? What is concussion?

The orthodontic treatment is a long one, from at least 6 weeks to three years. The duration of the treatment depends on the problem that each patient has and the dental apparatus used. It is a treatment that requires patience. In order to achieve the desired results, it is very important to periodically check-up, so that the orthodontist can monitor the progress and complete the treatment. At the end of the treatment, in order to maintain and strengthen the result, a band or sarmulita is applied to the back of the front teeth. It has, most of the time, a permanent character, but its presence does not inconvenience the patient.
